Date: April 22, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Start/End Location: Main Entrance of the Javits Center (429 11th Ave, New York, NY 10001)
We begin at Manhattan’s newest neighborhood, Hudson Yards, home to the "Vessel" and the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere. From here, we step onto the High Line, a 1.45-mile elevated public park built on a historic freight rail line. It is a world-class example of "adaptive reuse," turning industrial decay into a lush urban oasis.
Descending from the High Line, we walk through the Chelsea Art District. This area contains the world's highest concentration of contemporary art galleries. Once a district of warehouses and slaughterhouses, it now serves as the global epicenter for the modern art market.
As we head toward Midtown, we pass FIT, a premier public college for design, fashion, and business. Famous alumni like Calvin Klein and Michael Kors got their start here, making it a cornerstone of the city’s multi-billion dollar fashion industry.
We visit a site with a surprising connection to sports history. While many believe the Yankees "Interlocking NY" logo was designed for the team, it was actually created by Louis Tiffany (of Tiffany & Co.) in 1877 for a Medal of Valor to honor John McDowell, a New York City police officer shot in the line of duty. The Yankees adopted the design in 1909 to show solidarity with the NYPD.
Next, we view Madison Square Garden, "The World’s Most Famous Arena." Sitting atop Pennsylvania Station, it is the fourth version of the arena to bear the name. Just a block away is Herald Square, home to the flagship Macy’s, which was once the largest store in the world. From this vantage point, we will have a clear, iconic view of the Empire State Building.
We stop at the former Hotel McAlpin (now Herald Towers). It was in Room 1169 of this building on April 10, 1947, that Jackie Robinson received the historic phone call from the Brooklyn Dodgers officially telling him he was moving up to the Major Leagues, effectively breaking the color barrier in professional baseball.
We conclude our loop through the Garment District (or Fashion District). At its peak in the mid-20th century, 90% of all clothing sold in the United States was manufactured here. Today, it remains a vital hub for design, textile sourcing, and the "Sample Sale" culture that defines New York style.
